Men’s tennis: Davis duo wins second straight

NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Beach Tennis Club Director Scott Davis and

his father Gordon Davis made the most of Father’s Day Weekend. The duo

defended its title with success in the National Senior Father & Son

Tennis Championships, now in its seventh year. Gordon Davis made the trip

from Encino to pair up with his son, who is from Corona del Mar.

On Father’s Day, the Davises defeated the 1999 champions Tom and Ben

Brunkow, seeded No. 4, 6-3, 6-1, to claim the Senior 60 Division

championship. Tom Brunkow is from Bethseda, Md. and his son, Ben, is from

Valley Glen.

The tournament, which also included a Super Senior 70 Division, began

June 14, as the top-seeded Davis tandem earned a first-round bye.

In the Round of 16, the Davises defeated Jim Wilson and his son,

Galen, who are from Sante Fe, N.M., 6-1, 6-1. With a 6-3, 6-4, victory,

team Davis took care of Jim Nelson (Irvine) and his son, Brian

(Lakewood), in a quarterfinal match.

In their semifinal match, the Davis duo defeated Dave Grant

(Princeton, N.J.) and his son, Geoff (New York), 6-3, 6-4.

Kim Vieira, of Newport Beach, and his father, Don (Palm Desert),

advanced to the Round of 16 with a tough first-round victory. They

defeated Herman Ahlers (Las Vegas) and his son, Mike (Albuquerque, N.M.),

7-5, 6-3.

The Vieiras lost before reaching the quarterfinals, a 6-2, 6-3 setback

to the Grants, who were seeded No. 3.

In the Super Senior 70 Division, Newport Beach’s John Bowerbank and

his father, Joseph (Irvine), reached the quarterfinals, compiling two

victories. They defeated Jerry Paul (Borrego Springs) and his son, Paul

(Worchester, Mass.), 6-4, 7-5, in the first round. And in the Round of

16, The Bowerbanks downed Mike and Mark Trueblood (La Canada), 6-1, 7-5.

Larry Huebner (Fresno) and his son, Jim (Clovis), won the Super Senior

70 Division title.
