Attention all preteens and teens: It’s time to show off your creative

side.

Currently running on Tuesdays and Thursdays through July 5, Golden

West College is offering a Cartooning Class through its College For Kids

& Teens program, which is designed to be educational, stimulating and

fun.

The class, open to youngsters ages 8-14, will teach the basics on how

to draw your favorite cartoon characters, comic strips and action heroes.

Handouts will be provided.

Presenter Carl Glassford is an art professor, freelance illustrator

and graphic designer.

Glassford has been a professor at Golden West College for 30 years.

Most notably, he has worked as an art director for the Walt Disney Co.

The workshop continues today, Tuesday and July 5, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.,

in the Fine Arts building on the Golden West College campus.

Program fee is $55.

Participants are required to bring typing paper, a pencil and a fine

point, felt-tip pen.

Community services center offers sports camp

The summer months can be an exciting time for children of all ages.

Youngsters will be able to find more to do too by enrolling in the

Skyhawks Sports Camp through the Huntington Beach Community Services.

In order to maintain top quality instruction, each Skyhawks program is

based upon three things: safety, fun and skill development. In addition,

Skyhawks programs are noncompetitive and promote sports in a positive and

enthusiastic manner.

Each participant in a Skyhawks program receives a T-shirt as well as a

sport-specific ball relating to that week of camp.

This summer, Huntington Beach will offer half-day (9 a.m. to noon)

and/or full-day (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) sports camps to accommodate kids of

all ages (4 to 14 years) and abilities.

The first camp will run July 30 to Aug. 3, at the Edison Community

Skyhawks Sports Academy is based in the Pacific Northwest and is

nationally recognized for its outstanding sports camps.

‘Oceans’ helps those working on bachelor’s degrees

The “Oceans of Opportunity” at Golden West College include

approximately 60 career programs and 50 university-transfer majors for

students starting work on their bachelor’s degrees.

Golden West College was the first Orange County community college to

develop and offer innovative 16-week spring and fall semesters, which

help students prepare for studies at University of California and

California State University campuses.

Golden West also offers short-term courses starting throughout each

semester. The highly successful Weekend Express program allows students

to complete courses in accelerated six-week blocks and has more than a

half-dozen starting dates throughout the calendar year.

Classes at Golden West College cost just $11 per unit, the lowest

enrollment fee of any college system in California.

In addition, the college issues more than $10 million in financial aid

each year.
