Volleyball, volleyball, volleyball. This past weekend, the Assn. of

Volleyball Professionals Paul Mitchell Open hit the sands of Surf City.

Two weeks from now, the Amateur Volleyball Assn. will come to town.

On Saturday, more than 100 area beach volleyball players will compete

in the third of five competitions that make up the AVA California Crown

Series. The series began in Huntington Beach back on May 19.

The Open Division, one of seven divisions to be held, figures to be

competitive once again as professional beach volleyball players as well

as Olympians, vie for their share of the $1,000 prize purse.

The two-man team competition begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the south

side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Admission is free. . . .

Joshua Smith continues on his record-breaking rampage.

The six-year-old was back at it again last weekend as he broke three

more records against Harbor View Swim Team at the Harbor View Aquatics

Center. His records came in the 25-yard breaststroke (21.59), the 25-yard

butterfly (18.37) and the 25-yard backstroke (21.28).

Earlier this month, Smith, a member of the Green Valley Swim Team,

came up with a personal best as he smashed four team records in a single

meet.

What’s amazing about these feats is that Smith is winning these races

by full body lengths. His sister, Tori, who competes in the girls’ 7-8

Division, is one to be reckoned with too. Against Harbor View, she won

the 25-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard freestyle and barely missed out

on winning the 25-yard butterfly, where she placed second with a personal

best time of 17.75. . . .

Ocean View Little League has announced its 2001 All-Star teams.They

will open play in early July at the District 62 Tournament of Champions.

The Majors unit is comprised of the A’s Scott Baxter, Randy Guite,

Davey Hughey, Steven Martinez, Nick Orendorff and Coach Bill Orendorff;

Aaron Chatigny, James Miller and Brett Sterbens of the Dodgers; Adrian

Conger and Joseph Park of the Yankees; Troy Davis, Jon Grothe, Scott

Melchert and Manager Randy Melchert of the Mets, and the Giants’ Travis

Geery.

There are nine 12-year-olds, and five 11-year-olds on the roster.

The 9-10 squad is made up of the Mariners’ Jason Aden, Blake Cestr,

Cole Tischer and Manager Jim Lewis; the Mets’ Beau Amaral and Ryan

Vandenburg; Brian Cassidy, Michael Nakamura, Cory Walk, Jordan Maddox and

Coach Eric Bartisch of the Yankees; Zack Couey, Brandon Holland and coach

Dave Holland of the Reds; Michael Megill, Steven Murray and Tab Pagter of

the Rangers; Zackary Dunbar of the Dodgers and the Cubs’ Andrew Ragsdale.

Holland is the lone nine-year-old on the team. Murray will not play

due to injury and Pagter will miss the tournament due to vacation. . . .

There are plenty of sports camps offered this summer in Huntington

Beach and one of them is Ocean View High School’s Softball Summer Camp.

The five-day event will run from July 9-13, with instruction offered from

1 to 3 p.m. each day on the Ocean View softball fields.

The camp is open to youngsters ages 12-16, with a cost of $80 per
