Julie Moore plans to swim the Catalina Channel on July 14, despite an

asthmatic condition. The 27-year-old Newport Beach resident attempts to

cover the 20-mile course from Doctor’s Cove on Santa Catalina’s upper

north side to Cabrillo State Beach or to Rocky Point in San Pedro in

approximately 14 hours. “It’s 20% physical and 80% mental,” Moore says.

“It would be like playing monopoly for 12, 16 hours. You start singing to

yourself, having the paddlers sing with you, reciting the presidents,

anything to keep occupied.”

The crosstown rivals take center stage as the Newport Harbor Pony

All-Stars slam the Newport East All-Stars with a 20-2 win and a 10-2

victory. In reality, the all-stars are the class of 2000 at Newport

Harbor High, the winners, and Corona del Mar. In the 20-2 win, Otto

Verhulst is the offensive catalyst, going 2 for 3 with a sacrifice fly as

he scores two runs and drives in five. Booth Fellers also goes 2 for 3

with three RBIs. The Newport East Pony All-Stars are led by Josh Yelsey,

who bats 2 for 2 with a walk. Scott Beerer is among the NHBA All-Stars

and Britta Vogele plays for the Newport East All-Stars.

The Estancia High boys basketball team explodes for a 23-1 second

quarter and takes down Corona del Mar, 51-36, in the first round of the

Surf City Classic. The Eagles begin the second quarter down 14-8. Brandon

Casillas leads Estancia with 13 points, while Jose Nava scores 12. Ryan

Simpson has nine points and James Dawkins contributes eight.

The Costa Mesa American Major All-Stars open District 62 Tournament

play with a 5-3 victory over Ocean View. Costa Mesa’s Nick Cabico pitches

for five innings, striking out 10 and allowing no hits.

Brent Mayne, the former Costa Mesa High and Orange Coast College

standout, makes the most of his time as a Major League backup catcher for

the Kansas City Royals. He catches the entire game when Kansas City and

Texas play an 18-inning contest that lasts six hours and 28 minutes. On

the season, just before the All-Star break, Mayne commits just one

defensive error, while throwing out 31.5% (6 of 19) of would-be

base-stealers. “I’m learning a lot,” Mayne says. “I know the basics of

the game, but now I’m learning a lot of little things. You don’t realize

it , but it all adds up. I learned most of my baseball here (at OCC in

1987) and back then it made a bigger impact, but talking to umpires and

the hitters in the Major League is a different type of learning.”

The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team wins its opening game at

the Marina Firecraker Tournament, downing Esperanza, 56-25. Maureen

McLaren, who will be a senior, leads the Sailors with 20 points, while

Genevieve Evarts adds 11, and Michaela Ross chips in 10.

Chris Oeding, a Corona del Mar High product, is the standout for the

United State Junior Nationals water polo squad in a tournament at

Epslingen, Germany. Oeding is the tournament’s high scorer with 13 goals

in three games as the U.S. team finishes in second place behind Hungary

in the event.
