The 42nd edition of the Orange County North/South Prep All-Star
Football Game will kick off at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Orange Coast College’s
LeBard Stadium.
Local players who will suit up for the South squad include Huntington
Beach High defensive lineman Russ Chemberlen, quarterback Richard
Schwartz, running back Darryl Poston, receiver Christian Prelle and
linebacker Seth Prelesnik of Edison High, Ocean View High receiver
Phillip Smith, Marina High defensive back Bernard Mitchell and Fountain
Valley High defensive lineman Bernard Fano.
Edison’s Dave White will coach the South squad and Julian Smilowitz of
Fullerton heads the North.
Tickets for the game, which benefits such charities as the Pediatric
Adolescent Diabetic Research and Education Foundation Inc., Western Youth
Services, Orange County Youth Foundation, Inc., as well as local high
schools and youth groups, are $8 pre-sale (available through Orange
County high schools or any of the charities listed above), and $9 at the
gate.
The game will be televised by Cox Cable/Athletes in Motion.

One local youth basketball team, the South Coast Stars, a sixth-grade
team, is representing California as the No. 1 seed today through July 21
at the National Amateur Athletic Union tournament in Virginia Beach.

Congratulations to the Jr. Ice Dogs (Norris), Jets (Smythe), Saints
(Howe), Jokers (Squirt Club) and Red (Mite Club). These teams won their
respective youth roller hockey division championship playoffs at Coast 2
Coast Inline Hockey Center in Huntington Beach.

Max Hirsch has been added to the Junior division All-Star team for
Huntington Valley Little League, which currently is involved in the
District 62 tournament playoffs. Hirsch replaces Jimmy Romero.

Huntington Valley also announced its Senior division All-Star team,
which includes: Collin Balester, Kevin Brink, Cole Evans, Troy Fleck,
Jordan Hargrave, Ryan Holcomb, Austin Horick, Joel Kaluzny, Nikolas
Kazoura, Nathan Keadle, Sean Kovich, Jake Sellberg, Mike Smith, Gene
Strand, manager Justin Whitcomb and coach Chuck Smith.

The District 62 All-Star Tournament continues with double elimination
play today. The final rounds of competition will be held Saturday and
Sunday (if necessary). The Area 1 competition in 9/10 and Majors is being
played at Westminster Little League, while Area 2 play is hosted by
Robinwood Little League. Westminster also hosts the Junior League
tournament, with the Seniors playing at Robinwood.

Brace for the Invasion: The 2001 U.S. Open of Surfing and Festival
headlines the inaugural Philips Fusion, which runs July 30 to Aug. 5 at
the Huntington Beach Pier. In addition to hosting the world’s largest
professional surfing competition, this $240,000 extreme sports festival
includes skateboarding, bike, inline skating, music concerts and
demonstrations.
The U.S. Open of Surfing is a six-star rated event and plays a
critical role in determining the composition of the 2002 Assn. of Surfing
Professionals World Championship Tour by offering the largest points
allocation of any mainland American event this year.
