Julie Moore, a Newport Beach resident, swims 10 hours and 16 minutes

in the ocean before surrendering to the cold, which doesn’t allow her to

finish her 17.5-nautical mile Santa Catalina Channel Swim. With 6.73

nautical miles remaining, the 27-year-old asthmatic is forced to abandon

her dream as she suffers from hypothermia. “The disappointing thing is I

knew I could do it,” Moore says. “It wasn’t the asthma that got me, it

was the cold.”

Four players form Costa Mesa American Little League earn Daily Pilot

Dream Team honors. Nick Cabico, Michael McGuire, Michael Gardiner and

Billy Halverson represent the Costa Mesa team that reaches the finals of

the District 62 Area 1 Tournament. Also on the Dream Team (11- and

12-year-olds), which consists of 10 players, is Costa Mesa National’s

and Andy Almquist; Newport Harbor Baseball Association’s Cody Forsythe

and Cameron Pemstein.

Tim Parsel, who previously resigns his post as Estancia High’s boys

basketball coach, is named Boys Athletic Director by Principal Peggy

Anatol. He replaces Jeff Gall, a walk-on athletic director for the past

year, who accepts an administrative post in the Placentia-Yorba Linda

area. “I was really nervous by this,” says Anatol, who recalls a Parsel

promise when he steps down as basketball coach that he would be available

for the post if needed.

Orange Coast College product Chris Beasley is called up from Triple-A

Edmonton to the California Angels as a relief pitcher. Basketball is

actually Beasley’s best sport. He finishes his OCC basketball career as

the school’s second all-time scorer (behind John Vallely). Beasley plays

at Arizona State and later earns All-Pacific 10 Conference accolades. The

Angels acquire Beasley on Feb. 10, 1987, a year after the 29-year-old

right hander suffers an arm injury. But, with determination, he makes his

comeback complete when he is recalled.

Costa Mesa’s Todd Sand, teaming with Canoga Park’s Natasha Kuchiki,

win the gold medal at the United States Olympic Festival in pairs figure

skating. The pair, who train under John Nicks at Costa Mesa’s Ice Capades

Chalet, overcome some slips with a beautiful completion of a pair of

double Axels to gain the gold medal before 5,661 in Inglewood. Nicks is

awarded the skating guild’s Coach of the Year award for 1991.

Newport Beach’s Sharon Attlesey teams with Huntington Beach’s Cathy

Marino for a gold medal in women’s kayaking in the U.S. Olympic Festival.

They finish in 2:07.08 in the 500 meters, and they are also members of

the gold-medal winning fours team with Shirley Dery-Batlik and DeAnne

Hemmens.

Costa Mesa’s Fred Spaulding is a silver medalist in canoeing in the

U.S. Olympic Festival, going 2:16.51 in the 500-meters race. He also

teams with his brother, David of Newport Beach to claim the bronze in the

500-meter doubles race with a clocking of 2:11.65. Fred Spaulding is also
