How about a youth world series? Hmmmmmm ...

Oh, oh, Tony’s thinking again.

But you’ll really like this one, folks. Let’s run it up the flagpole

and see if anyone salutes.

Throughout my three summers of covering these bravados, I always get

asked the same questions by parents from both the Newport Beach and Costa

Mesa areas.

“How does our league compare to theirs?”

“Are we better than them?”

“Why do you guys print more stuff about them than us?”

Well, I’ve come up with the answer to all those questions. Drum roll

please ...

The Daily Pilot All-Star Challenge! It has a nice ring to it, don’t

you think?

As of now, there are four Majors Division teams, Costa Mesa National

and American Little League as well as two teams associated with the

Newport Beach Little League.

After the smoke clears from District All-Star Tournament action, the

winner from the annual Costa Mesa Mayor’s Cup (CMNLL vs. CMALL) would

play the winner of a two-out-of-three tournament between the two NBLL

clubs (we’ll come up with a catchy name on that tourney later) in a

battle for local bragging rights.

The DPASC would be a two-of-three tournament with home field advantage

alternating every year between Newport and Costa Mesa. Basically, the

same thing Major League Baseball does each year for the World Series.

Could a tournament like this ever take place? Why wouldn’t it? From

what I understand, the Mayor’s Cup is July 25, 26 and 28 (if necessary).

Newport could have its two-of-three around that same time and we could

set the DPASC up for the following weekend.

Game 1 held at Costa Mesa, Game 2 held at Corona del Mar and Game 3,

if necessary, held at a neutral site somewhere. Then, each year, the

winning team would get to host the tiebreaking game.

So I officially lay down the challenge to the presidents of both

little leagues to get this going. Keep me posted and let me know how I

can help.

But there are other obstacles to consider. I’m sure the Newport Harbor

Baseball Association would want to play, too. I’m not sure how that would

work considering there are some major differences in the rules, such as

leading off, stealing, etc.

Perhaps an agreement could be arranged to find some neutral ground on

rules, but that might be a can of worms too tough to deal with.

It starts with phone calls, so to the youth baseball presidents of

Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, start chatting and see what we can come up

with.
