Huntington Beach resident Stephanie Kozowik recently became the first

American to win an Australian outrigger national crown when the team she

competed on, the Surfer’s Paradise Outriggers, won the gold medal 500 and

1,000 races at the Australian National Title for outriggers.

The 31-year-old, who designs her own line of swimwear, called “Liquid

Australia,” tried out for and earned a spot on the six-woman squad. After

its success at the national event, the team went on to win gold again in

the 500 and 1,000 at Australia’s prestigious Hamilton Cup. It also took

first place in the around-the-island race.

Surfer’s Paradise Outriggers is based along Australia’s famed Gold

Coast.

Kozowik, who trains in Newport Beach, next will compete at the World

Championships in late September. The cross-channel race will stretch from

the Hawaiian islands of Molokai to Oahu.

The Gardikas Sisters, Jennifer and Martha, played on teams this past

weekend that won medals at the 2001 USA Junior National Volleyball

Tournament in Sandy, Utah.

Jennifer Gardikas played on Goldenwest’s club squad, coached by Craig

Pazanti. Goldenwest defeated hometown favorite High Country Volleyball

Club, 25-18 and 25-21, to win the gold medal in the 18-Club division.

Martha Gardikas, a Marina High student, played for the Cal Jrs.

Volleyball Club coached by Sonny Okamoto. Cal Jrs. also featured Marina

teammate and All-American Becky Green. The team captured a silver medal

in the 16-Open division. . . .

Raymond Bardone, a Golden West College student and much-decorated

athlete at Edison High, will be trying out for the U.S. Olympic bobsled

team that will compete at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Bardone, 21, won back-to-back Southern California decathlon and state

MVP titles in 1998 and 1999 while at Orange Coast College. During his

Edison days, Bardone was the track team’s MVP in 1996, served as team

captain and went into the school’s Hall of Fame during the 1996-97

season. . . .

A local baseball team consisting of several Huntington Beach athletes,

the Mustang Major A squad, won the recent Dana Point Classic tournament.

The team defeated St. Hedwig A, 12-6, Newport Harbor A, 9-4 and Dana

Point A in the final, 13-8.

Sean Vogel, Devin Huskins, Terry Zant, L.J. Little, Ryan Manzon and

Kyle Kerby were all effective on the mound.

Slater Davies, who went 7 for 12, Little and Anders Torgersen, who

belted a 220-foot home run over the center field fence charged the

offense.

Hayden Toney, Brandon Bauman, Matt Weaver, Juan Carlos Rodriguez and

Jonathon Crouch were solid in the field. . . .

The city of Huntington Beach Community Services Department, in

cooperation with Skyhawks Sports Programs for Kids, will offer several

camps, beginning next week.

Upcoming camp dates include a basketball camp, which will run July

23-27, at Murdy Community Center, flag football, slated for the same

dates and a Mini-Hawk Camp, which introduces sports to younger children,

will be held July 23-27.
