EXCHANGE STUDENTS RETURN: Corona del Mar Junior High students

Christopher Crawford and Alessandra Hass and Ensign students H. Derek

Davis and Bryndis Klein along with advisors Nelson and Nina Rojas, have

returned from a 10-day visit to Okazaki, Japan, on a trip sponsored by

the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa. The Rotary Clubs of Newport-Balboa and

Okazaki South joined hands in 1982 to exchange junior high students for

the purpose of developing friendship and understanding among young

people.

This led to the two clubs becoming “sister clubs” and the creation in

1984 of the Newport Beach Sister City Assn. to expand the relationship

between cities. 2001 marks the 19th year of the annual student exchange,

with Newport-Mesa students traveling in the summer and the Okazaki

students coming this way in October.

During the 10-day trip, the Newport Mesa students were met by the

Mayor of Okazaki, were hosted by families in Osaka, visited historical

sites, attended Japanese schools and toured Tokyo. The returning students

will share their experiences at a future meeting of the Rotary Club of

Newport-Balboa and will begin to plan for the October Okazaki student

visit.

POLICE OFFICERS OF THE YEAR: Costa Mesa Police Chief Dave Snowdon

introduced Sgt. Don Holford while Newport Beach Captain Paul Hennessey

introduced Sgt. Joe Wingert to the members of the Exchange Club of

Newport Harbor as they honored the Police Officers of the Year at a

recent luncheon. Holford has served Costa Mesa since 1988, assigned as

the field training officer, SWAT team member and as a detective working

on the Denise Huber case. Wingert, a member of the Newport Beach force

since 1980, is currently a motor officer and has received 55

commendations during his years of service.

HONORED: Arnie Frankenberger, a member of the Exchange Club of Newport

Harbor, was honored by the Exchange Club of Orange Coast with the “Book

of Golden Deeds” award. In announcing the award, Orange Coast President

Ed Kohlmeier sited Frankenberger’s many contributions to the community

and his willingness to perform dental work for those in need who are

unable to pay for his services.

SPONSORED THANKED: Robert Tarlton, manager of community affairs of

Ford Motor Co.’s Premier Automotive Group, accepted an appreciation

plaque from the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club recognizing Lincoln Mercury’s

participation as the presenting sponsor for the club’s fifth annual golf

tournament for our children and community.

The club also recognized other major contributors, Marriott Vacation

Resorts and CH2MHill, which were Platinum Sponsors.

According to member John Brainerd, there were many other sponsors and

supporters of the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club’s tournament as well as

numerous volunteers and players, all of whom made the event the most

successful ever. Next year’s golf tournament is scheduled for May 6, 2002

at the Newport Beach Country Club. For information, call Bob Jamieson at

(714) 287-6888.

Proceeds will help to care for abused children through Olive Crest

Homes, provide educational funds in Orange County and continue the

funding for almost 30 other charitable causes the Rotary Club of Newport

Irvine supports.

CLUB NOTES: Dan Palmer will be installed as president of the Exchange

Club of Newport Harbor on Tuesday night aboard the Angela Louise as it

cruises Newport Harbor. John Fornes says save the date of Aug. 30 for

the annual movie fund-raiser presented by the Exchange Club of Newport

Harbor at Edwards Lido Theater. The movie will be “Glitter.” Details to

follow.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SERVICE CLUBS: Bob Huber, classification past

service: Professional Financial Services, sponsored by Jim Dougherty, who

joined the Rotary Club of Newport-Irvine.

Worth Repeating: “Thought for the Day” furnished by Greg Kelley of the

Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “We can often do more for others

by trying to correct our own faults than by trying to correct theirs.”
