SURF AND SUN

THE WEATHER FORECAST

Partly sunny skies will greet the early morning risers, along with a

comfortably chilly temperature in the low 60s. By 1 or 2 p.m., the clouds

should have a getaway, leaving a bright day in the high 70s. Out on the

Orange County Fairgrounds, expect it to feel in the 80s.

Things will start cooling off about 6 p.m., though the temperatures

will stay mild, in the mid-60s until after midnight. Those pesky clouds

won’t even reappear in mass until today’s just a memory. Sunday should be

a nice carbon copy, maybe even a little warmer with highs reaching into

the 80s.

THE BOATING FORECAST

Light winds will blow across the harbor’s waters and right offshore at

10 to 15 knots, kicking up mild, 2-foot waves. There could be an

occasional 4-foot swell, which most likely will sneak up on you during

periods of fog in the morning. The fog will reappear late, and the winds

will pick up for some 5-foot swells.

Things will be a bit wilder deeper at sea, as expected. The winds will

sustain between 10 and 20 knots with some swells of 6 feet in the

morning. The fog could hang out a ways. By nightfall, the winds should

die down a bit to between 10 and 15 knots. Expect more fog after the sun

sets.

SURF

The building southwest swell should peak this morning, but it’s

turning out not to hold as much punch as hoped. The waves are

inconsistent and likely won’t break much above shoulder high in Newport

Beach. There might be an occasional head-high or better set, but be

prepared to wait. By the late afternoon, what little powerful surf comes

through will already be fading. The shape, though, should be OK,

especially before the 4-foot-high tide in the late morning ruins it.
