Tennis: BBC Junior Tennis Classic kicks off strong

NEWPORT BEACH - The Balboa Bay Club Junior Tennis Classic is in

full swing, so to speak, with seeded players kicking off play today at

the BBC’s Racquet Club

On the local front, second-seeded Charlie Alvarado of Costa Mesa will

take on Coto de Caza’s Mika DeCoster today at 2 p.m. in Boys 10 Singles

action.

Third-seeded Charlie Corum of Costa Mesa will play at 11 a.m. against

Laguna Niguel’s Taylor Stephan, while Newport Beach’s Daron Arnold

advanced to today’s Round of 16 and will play Dove Canyon’s Kyle Kager at

2 p.m.

In the Boys 12 Singles division, second-seeded Ryan Coughren will take

on Lake Forest’s Travis McClellan, while Newport Beach’s Andrew Singer

will go up against Christopher Russell of Palos Verdes. Both matches

begin at 3:30.

Third-seeded Jake Fleming and sixth-seeded Fabian Matthews, both of

Newport Beach, will play in second-round action at 2 p.m. today, while

unranked locals Jonathan Kroopf (2 p.m.), Sean Pham (2 p.m.) and Nicholas

Gingold (2 p.m.) will also kick off play today.

In a battle of locals, Newport Beach’s Tyler Deck defeated Costa

Mesa’s Andrew Hinger in Boys 16 singles action and will play Corona del

Mar’s Brennan Roberts tonight at 6:30. CdM’s Shaun Maguire (11 a.m.),

Newport Beach’s Issei Saida (5 p.m.) and Bryan Warsaw (6:30) will also be

competing in second-round action.

On the girls side, second-seeded Brittany Holland from Corona del Mar

will take on Laguna Niguel’s Brianna Ondryas at 11 a.m., in Girls 18

singles, while Newport Beach’s Carmen Khoury (11 a.m.), Costa Mesa’s

Kelly Nelson (5 p.m.), Newport Beach’s Brittany Minna (11 a.m.) and Costa

Mesa’s Megan Hawkins (12:30 p.m.) will also take to the court in Round of

16 action.

In Girls 16 singles, Newport Beach’s Amber Ray will take on fellow

local Vanessa Dunlap in second-round action today at 12:30 p.m. Also at

12:30, Newport Beach’s Amanda Rubenstein will take on Yorba Linda’s Janet

Jenq and Costa Mesa’s Krista McIntosh will go up against Johanna Phillips

of Huntington Beach. At 3:30, Newport’s Diana Khoury and Juliette Mutzke

will do battle, while Newport Beach’s Bonnie Adams (8 a.m.) will also

participate in today’s action.

Corona del Mar’s Katie McKitterick advanced to today’s second-round

action with a win over Tiffany Huang in Girls 14 singles action. Newport

Beach’s Sarah Geocaris (8 a.m.), Carly Adams (8 a.m.), Jaclyn Manning (8

a.m.), Tala Jahangiri (8 a.m.), Karin Hacatoryan (8 a.m.) Jill Damion (8

a.m.) and Jamison Steele (5 p.m.) will also be in play today.

In Girls 12 singles action, top-seeded Jillian Braverman of Newport

Beach kicks off her play against Riverside’s Taylor Raney today at 5

p.m., while Newport Beach’s Michelle Atkins (11 a.m.) and Kristina

Heimstaedt (5 p.m.) will also play in Round of 16 action.

Top-seeded Cierra Gaytan of Corona del Mar will open play in the Girls

10 singles division at 3:30 against Laguna Beach’s Paige Polizois.

Newport Beach pair Meghan Chomeau (6:30 p.m.) and Melissa Matsuoka (3:30

p.m.) will also compete today.
