Obituary
Melvin ‘Mel’ Owen Carpenter, a 44-year Newport Beach resident, died
Sunday of a heart attack following a stroke. He was 82. Mr. Carpenter was
born in St. Louis, Mo., on Nov. 23, 1918. He moved from Illinois to
California in 1919 and grew up in Maywood, Calif. He graduated from Bell
High School in Bell and moved to Newport Beach in 1957. Mr. Carpenter
was a meter reader for the Southern California Gas Co. He was a member of
the West Point parents club and was YMCA leader for five years in
Maywood. He is survived by son Kenny Carpenter, daughter Lani Brizic,
brother Craig Carpenter, sister Marguerite Calvert, four grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.
Thursday at Pacific View Memorial Park. Services will be held Friday at
11 a.m. at Pacific View.
