Kids will be fascinated to see and learn some of magic’s basics at the

Magic for Kids workshops being offered at Golden West College.

Tricks in cards, coins and rope will be offered in the workshops,

which are part of the “College for Kids & Teens” program that is running

all summer long through the school’s community services department.

Presenter Frank Yee received a magician’s certificate from Cal State

Fullerton in performing arts. He teaches magic at community colleges and

performs at parties and events.

Kee is also a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood.

“Kids are very attentive and excited about learning tricks, because

they can’t wait to perform these tricks for their friends,” Yee said.

The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to noon Friday in the school’s

Community Center Room.

Honors program offers list of classes

The Honors Program of Golden West College, in its first year of

operation, is focused on establishing a high-standard for motivated

students.

The Honors Program classes were first offered in fall 2000, enrolling

more than 100 students. Now that the program is in full swing, Golden

West College is anticipating more student interest for the fall 2001

semester.

The following Fall 2001 Honors Program Classes will be offered:

Humanities 190H, Honors Seminar; Biology 100H, Introduction to Biology

(lab only); English 100H, Honors Freshman Composition; English 114H,

Honors Great Myths and Legends; History 180H, Honors History of Western

Civilization; Math 160H, Honors Statistics; Psychology 100H, Honors

Introductory Psychology, and Sociology 100H, Honors Introduction to

Sociology.

Chuck Whitchurch, the programs’ coordinator, says things are off to a

promising start.

“We’ve created several new Honors classes, including the Honors

Seminar, an interdisciplinary course that teaches critical thinking,

orients students and involves them in our service-learning component,” he

said. “The most gratifying moments for me, have come in the classroom.

Students become so engrossed and they are so pleased when they finally

get it.”

To graduate from the Honors Program, Golden West College students must

maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average and complete

Humanities 190H, Honors Seminar, with a grade of “C” or higher.

An application and one reference letter is required for approval.

High school students who are interested in the Honors Program must

have a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA.
