A 37-year-old Lakewood man who was rescued by lifeguards at Crystal

Cove State Park on Sunday afternoon was still listed in serious condition

Monday at Hoag Hospital, officials said.

Joselito Ortega was pulled from the water near the 8200 block of East

Coast Highway about 3:20 p.m. Sunday, Supervising Ranger Michael Eaton

said.

He said passersby saw Ortega face down and called for help. Eaton said

lifeguards dragged Ortega out of the water with the help of a couple of

beachgoers.

Then the lifeguards used an automated external defibrillator twice on

Ortega to resuscitate him, Eaton said.

“This is the first time our lifeguards have used this equipment,” he

said.

Eaton said Ortega apparently went under after he fell off his

bodyboard.
