The Philips U.S. Open of Surfing kicked off Monday, but the
international flavor this competition has was infused with local success.
Tim Reyes triumphed in the $5,000 Billabong Junior Pro, where nearly
100 of the world’s top junior surfers competed. Held in “classic”
Huntington Beach conditions -- 5-10 mph winds from the southwest combined
with 2-3 foot waves -- the 19-year-old Reyes made the most of the small
surf and maneuvered his way to the highest scoring wave (9.17) of the
day.
“The wave before that one, I kind of blew it and I knew I needed to do
something big,” the Edison High grad said. “Luckily, a right came
through. I didn’t know how high of a score it was but I was definitely
way stoked when I found out.”
That wave allowed Reyes to finish the day with the highest scoring
heat (23.50), as well.
The win landed Reyes a spot in the quarterfinals, scheduled for
Saturday afternoon.
Huntington Beach’s Micah Byrne also will compete in Saturday’s
quarterfinals.

Huntington’s Bryan Osuna just returned from the Cadet National
Wrestling Championships in Fargo, N.D., where he earned a bronze medal in
the 95-pound weight class. The weekend event featured some of the top
young wrestlers nationwide. The third-place finish earned Osuna
All-America status. He finished the tournament with a 7-1 record,
defeated three previous All-Americans along the way and missed making the
division final by just one point.
Following a summer filled with various competitions, Osuna will go
into rest mode before entering Calvary Chapel High in the fall.
