High school water polo: Newport reels off two

Honolulu, Hawaii - Before school begins, the Newport Harbor and

Corona del Mar high school water polo programs have ventured to Hawaii to

prepare for the upcoming season.

The Sailors and Sea Kings are in the 33rd Annual Hawaiian Invitational

Tournament, that started Sunday and will end Saturday.

Newport Harbor opened the tournament with two victories at Punahou

High School. First, the Sailors defeated Wolfpack, 7-6, Monday, as

Michael Bury led the Tars with three goals, two coming in a pivotal

fourth period. Brent Armstrong, Charlie Hockenbury and Michael Vanderburg

scored one goal each. Goalies Nathan McLain and Alex Stabler combined for

three saves.

Newport then blew past Sierra Nevada, 11-4, Tuesday. This time

Vanderburg led the way with six goals, three coming in the fourth period.

Fellow Sailor Nathan Wiener tallied two goals, while Ross Sinclair and

Bury put one in each. McLain and Stabler combined for five saves.

The Sailors and Sea Kings will continue tournament play today, aiming

for championship games on Friday and Saturday.
