Jeff Deffenbaugh is closing in on yet another title in the Huntington

Beach Pro/Am Surf Series.

With the 2001 season winding down, Deffenbaugh took another step

toward securing his fourth consecutive Pro/Am championship as he won last

weekend’s main event at 9th Street. The first place finish equated to

$1,000 for Deffenbaugh, who placed ahead of Kirk Tice, Bryan Doonan,

Danny Nichols, Jesse Merle Jones, Ryan Turner, Brandon Guilmette and Adam

Virs.

Deffenbaugh is the current ratings points leader in the Pro/Am

Division, with two events remaining on the 2001 schedule.

There were seven other division winners last weekend, including Chris

Waring, who took both boys’ and juniors’. His two wins marks the first

time in HB Pro/Am Surf Series history that a surfer has won two

divisions. Other first place finishers included Andrew Doheny in super

groms, Brandon Tipton in mens, Mark Austin in masters, Steve Newton in

longboards and Erica Hosseini in womens.

Ryan Turner, who tied for fifth in the Pro/Am competition, won the XS

AirShow event, beating out Adam Virs, Mark Belmonte and Joe Crimo in the

competition.

The next Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series event, a one-star rated

competition, is slated for Sept. 15-16 at the south side of the pier. The

series championships are scheduled for Oct. 27-28 at 1st Street and the

south side of the Pier.
