Vote:

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board voted unanimously for proposed revisions and additions to

board policies series 4000, which is intended to provide up-to-date

language and guidelines for district operations.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The California School Boards Assn.’s comprehensive index/table of

contents is widely used by districts throughout the state. It provides a

standard index system designed to accommodate future policies/regulations

and at the same time provides a table of contents for its manual. As

necessary, the board is charged with developing new policies and revising

or rescinding existing ones in order to reflect new legislation and

changing community views as per the state’s Education Code.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board voted in favor of the Pupil Textbook and Instructional

Materials Incentive Act. This law offers school districts an opportunity

to augment their state instructional materials fund monies for

kindergarten through 12th grade.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The district can now submit a letter of assurance to the

Superintendent of Public Instruction that the Board of Trustees has

complied with the conditions of the Incentive Act. Currently, OVSD has

sufficient textbooks for all students in all academic areas. However, as

student growth occurs in the district, additional funds are needed to

provide textbooks and instructional materials for new students as well as

replacement books for lost materials. Additional textbooks are also

needed to supplement the regular textbook adoption where the textbooks

are not in alignment with new state content standards -- especially in

the areas of science at the elementary schools and math in grades

kindergarten through eighth.

WHAT HAPPENED:

A unanimous vote was cast to allow members of OVSD Management Team to

attend a symposium for the 2001-2002 school year.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Annually in August, members of OVSD’s Management Team attend a

symposium to plan for the new school year. Some years the meeting has

been held out of the district; other years it has been held locally. On

Aug. 22, the management symposium will be held at the Aliso Creek Inn in

Laguna Beach. The purpose of the meeting is to provide opportunities for

district administrators to work together on common goals, learn more

about district direction and get to know each other and strengthen their

skills as managers and instructional leaders.

NEXT MEETING

Sept. 18, 7 p.m., Ocean View School District, 17200 Pinehurst Lane.
