There’s still time to view children’s sculptures at the Huntington

Beach Art Center through Saturday as part of an art exhibition titled,

“It’s not what you think it is.”

Darlene DeAngelo, director of programs at the center, said the program

gives students opportunities to work together on projects and create

professional-quality work by the end of the class.

Children created their works of art from a variety of materials such

as Saran Wrap, Scotch tape, wire, pastels, grocery bags and rope.

“The children worked collaboratively as a team to create large-scale

sculptures out of unusual materials,” said DeAngelo, who is in her second

year running the event. “They stayed after school on Tuesdays during the

school year to complete the projects.”

DeAngelo said mentoring is an important part of the class as the

children worked with staff, other students and artist Carol Hubbart.

“We want [the students] to understand what arts provide in the

community and what art is in contemporary times,” DeAngelo said.

The exhibit the gallery will be open from noon to 8 p.m. today and

noon to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is free.

The art center is at 538 Main St. in Huntington Beach.
