Club Water Polo: Newport splits in Hawaii

HONOLULU - The Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar high school water

polo programs, playing under club formats, continued to battle in the

33rd annual Hawaiian Invitational Tournament Friday.

Newport’s boys 18-and-under team began the day’s action with a 15-6

victory over Bainbridge. Michael Bury led with four goals. Brad Dillman,

who scored a goal in the 11-4 victory over Sierra Nevada Tuesday,

collected two goals, as did Nathan Weiner, Thomas Butman, Brent Armstrong

and Ross Sinclair. Michael Vanderburg scored one goal. Newport goalies

Nathan McLain and Alex Stabler combined for four saves.

A loss came in the second game of the day for Newport as it lost, 6-4,

to the Hawaiian Islands A team. Vanderburg scored two goals, while Ryan

Bean and Sinclair finished with one each. McLain and Stabler combined

efforts to turn back seven shots.
