The Ocean View School District on Tuesday studied proposals for

gymnasium/auditorium/locker room facilities for its four middle schools.

Presenters and participants included all four school principals and

architects Paul Westberg and Bonnie Smith of Westberg & White Inc.

The discussion included a review of the architectural drawings and

elevations of the middle school gymnasium/auditorium/locker room

facilities, landscape designs, lighting configurations, placement of

buildings, construction management firm vs. construction project manager

and funding sources and timeline for initiating certificates of

participation for construction of gymnasium/auditoriums/locker rooms.

The gymnasiums, which have faced harsh criticism since proposed, would

be built at Marine View, Mesa View, Spring View and Vista View middle

schools.

Lawsuits have been filed by the City of Fountain Valley and the group,

Neighborhoods For Education First, said Stefan Rubendall of the neighbors

group.

The public can view the proposed plans at the district office, at

17200 Pinehurst Lane.

In addition, the board discussed the possible construction of a new

magnet school for kindergarten through the eighth grade on land the

district owns above the Bolsa Chica Mesa.

Board appoints new Huntington Beach City School superintendent

The Huntington Beach City School District board this week unanimously

agreed to bring a former district director of curriculum back as

superintendent.

Gary Rutherford, who has spent the past two years as the assistant

superintendent of educational services for the Westminster School

District, will begin Aug. 30 and take over for acting superintendent

Kathy Kessler.

“We are thrilled that Gary Rutherford is retuning to us in his new

role as Superintendent,” Kessler said.

Kessler will return to her role as assistant superintendent.

Rutherford is replacing Duane Dishno, who retired June 30.

“I am very much honored to be selected the new superintendent,” said

Rutherford, a Huntington Beach resident. “This is a great community to

live and work in, and I look forward to serving this district.”
