Boys water polo: Newport Youth Water Polo fares well
Two age group teams from Newport Youth Water Polo took home first
place trophies at the Hawaii Invitational Tournament earlier this month.
Newport’s 12 and under coed team opened with a 9-3 win over the
Hawaiian Islands, but lost to Commerce, 10-2. However, Commerce was
disqualified for having older players, so Newport moved on.
After a 13-2 win over Rose Bowl and an automatic win over Commerce,
5-0, Newport advanced to the final and defeated the Hawaiian Islands,
8-2.
Collin Sherman and Clinton Jorth were named co-MVP’s of the
tournament.
The boys 14 and-under team fared just as well in their bracket,
posting wins over the Hawaiian Islands “B” (20-1) and San Miguel (7-4) in
the early rounds.
After a tough 9-5 loss to Commerce, Newport regrouped and edged
Hawaiian Islands “A”, 8-6, setting up a finals showdown with Commerce.
With both teams deadlocked, 7-7, Newport goalie Daniel Furman grabbed
a loose ball and was looking for an outlet pass. Instead, he sent in a
perfectly-placed lob shot over the goalie’s head and into the back of the
net for the game-winning goal. Furman was named MVP of the tournament.
