WALK FOR PEACE: World peace advocates of all ages are invited to join

in the Orange County Peace Walk/Peace Jam 2001, which will take place

Sept. 22 at Triangle Square. The event is being held in celebration of

the United Nations’ International Day of Peace.

Walkers will gather on the upper level of Triangle Square at 11:30

a.m. for opening festivities featuring remarks by Costa Mesa Mayor Libby

Cowan and Councilwoman Linda Dixon. Native American Geeta Sacred Song of

Orange County, who is an international peace shaman known as Peace

Mother, will then lead participants in a ceremony to officially begin the

Peace Walk. Doves will be released into the air, and rose petals will be

scattered as walkers begin circling Triangle Square, carrying banners,

chanting, singing and playing musical instruments.

After the Peace Walk, local musicians will provide live entertainment

until 4 p.m. The entertainment lineup for the event will include And the

Angels Sing, an eight-person El Cajon-based vocal group; Brian Taraz, a

Garden Grove gospel rock singer-guitarist; Orange Coast Unitarian

Universalist Church Choir of Costa Mesa, under the direction of music

director Adriana Lopez-Young; Evren Ozan, an 8-year-old Native American

flutist from Laguna Beach; Theresa Padua, a Los Angeles-based flutist,

drummer and singer; Global Peace Vibrations, an Orange Coast-based

instrumental group featuring instruments from global traditions,

including the didgeridoo and Native American drums.

In addition to the musical entertainment, the local Orange County

United Nations will give out free UNICEF trick or treat boxes,

participating nonprofit groups will host displays, and a raffle will be

held for prizes.

Local community and faith-based organizations in charge of planning

the event are the Newport-Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council, Bahais of Costa

Mesa and Huntington Beach, Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church,

Amnesty International, United Nations Assn., NAACP and the Center for

Peace and Healing. Chairs of the organizing committee are Lane Calvert of

the Bahais of Costa Mesa and the Rev. Karen Stoyanoff of the Orange Coast

Unitarian Universalist Church.

People or groups interested in taking part in the Orange County Peace

Walk/Peace Jam should call Stoyanoff at (949) 646-4652. No entry fee is

the Newport-Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “My grandfather once told me
