Neal Ruby has been elected president to the McDonald’s Operator’s

Assn. of Southern California Board of Directors. Ruby’s family owns seven

McDonald’s restaurants in Costa Mesa, Westminster and San Pedro. Ruby’s

one-year term runs through June and will preside over the 11-member

board, which oversees McDonald’s advertising, marketing, promotional and

public relations throughout Southern California. Ruby became

owner/operator of the association in 1984 and has served as a member of

the San Diego regional leadership committee and the menu management team.

. . . Mark M. Mardock was promoted to senior vice president of education

services for the Southern California division of McCarthy Building Cos.

Inc., in Newport Beach. McCarthy is the nations’s oldest privately held

construction firm. Mardock will oversee the firm’s education business

unit, responsible for all of McCarthy’s kindergarten through 12th-grade

projects throughout Southern California. He will also supervise the

delivery of preconstruction and construction services for education

projects. Mardock has been with McCarthy for 15 years, most recently as

vice president and construction director. . . . Patrick T. Hogan, a

Newport Harbor High School graduate and son of Timothy and Mary Hogan,

received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College at the school’s

commencement ceremony June 10. . . . Jessica Herbert of Newport Beach

completed a 78-day semester in Baja California with the National Outdoor

Leadership School. The semester had three sections: sailing, sea kayaking

and backpacking. Students moved along Baja’s coastline, camping during

the night and sailing during the day. They learned skills in coastal

navigation, seamanship, anchoring, sail handling, map reading, hazard

evaluation, kayak coastal travel skills, weather reading and paddling

skills. The school has field expeditions on five continents and runs

10-day to semester-length courses for people ages 14 to 70 in the Rocky

Mountains, Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Western Canada, Mexico, Chile,

India, Australia and Kenya. . . . Jennifer Shaver, daughter of Paul and

Janice Shaver of Costa Mesa, and a 1998 Newport Harbor High School

graduate, was recently appointed to the student advisory council for

sports at Vanguard University. Shaver will be entering her junior year.
