Volunteers are encouraged to head to the beach Saturday and get their

hands on the trash that litters the shore.

The city of Huntington Beach and the Everything’s Going to Be All

right Foundation will host the beach cleanup Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon

along a three-mile stretch of sand.

Robert Kinsler, a spokesman for the city, said volunteers should be

looking to collect cigarette butts, plastics and foam pieces from the

beach because the items don’t decompose.

“This is a great event, something the city couldn’t do without the

help of its residents,” Kinsler said.

He said there were close to 500 volunteers last year that collected

2,267 pounds of litter and debris.

Volunteers should plan to meet at the north end of the Huntington

Beach Pier at 9 a.m. Preregistration is not required. Volunteers can park

for free in the lot at the corner of 1st Street and Pacific Coast

Highway.

Bags and gloves will be provided and there will be a raffle for all

volunteers following the cleanup.

The coastal cleanup is part of the 17th annual California Coastal

Cleanup Day 2001, a statewide event dedicated to ridding the state’s

beaches and coastal areas of trash, which can endanger marine animals and

humans.

Last year, 229,928 cigarette butts, 84,256 plastic foam pieces, 19,969

beverage bottles, and 67,054 food bags/wrappers were collected statewide

from the coastal cleanup. Ortiz, who also appears in video games

produced by Crave Entertainment, will return to the HB Ultimate Training

Center once “the fight is finished,” Tiki added.
