NEWPORT-MESA -- In the wake of the most tragic terrorist attack on

American soil, residents here are planning to join the rest of the nation

today in searching for answers, solace and a sense of peace.

Many will abandon their daily routine for at least a moment and bow

their heads today in observance of the National Day of Prayer and

Remembrance proclaimed by President Bush.

Newport Beach resident Janet Dawson, 55, said she feels a void in her

life now that can only be filled by focusing her energy on a higher

power.

“I’m not a religious person, but I’m feeling a need for something.

This was the most horrendous thing I’ve seen in my lifetime. It was the

most destructive day, and I’m just feeling a need for something more,”

Dawson said.

Costa Mesa Mayor Libby Cowan said the National Day of Remembrance will

give each American an opportunity to reach out to their neighbors for

comfort and support, and urged residents to take part.

“Prayer is an important element of the healing process,” Cowan said.

“As a nation, we must heal to assure our freedoms are protected while we

carefully and thoughtfully respond to this murderous act and rebuild our

nation’s future.”

Showing its support for the president’s proclamation, Costa Mesa City

Hall will take part in a moment of silence at 11 a.m.

On Tuesday, a series of terrorist attacks hit the World Trade Center,

toppling both towers, and the Pentagon. By Thursday, as many as 5,000

people were believed to have perished in the attacks.

In addition to prayer, members of the community plan to show

solidarity by adorning neighborhood trees with red, white and blue

ribbons and holding a synchronized candlelight vigil at 7 p.m.

An e-mail that circulated Thursday called for residents to step out

their doors, stop their cars and light a candle.

“We will show the world that Americans are strong and united together

against terrorism,” the message said.
