NMJAAF: Junior Midget Seahawks blanks Norwalk

NORWALK - The Newport-Mesa Junior All-American Football Junior

Midget Seahawks rebounded from a tough loss in the season opener for a

34-0 win over the host Norwalk Saints.

John Angelo ran for three touchdowns to lead the offensive output for

the locals. Matt Reiger caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Lance

and had a key interception, while Kyle Sneekluth added a 30-yard TD grab

from Lance.

The defense was led by Ricky Sepulvada’s 13 tackles and a quarterback

sack as well as Matt Lutton, who added eight tackles and a sack.

Other strong play came from quarterback Tom Jackson, who hit Mike

Orosco with a 50-yard bomb down the sideline.

In other NMJAAF action:

Pee Wee Seahawks 8, Inglewood Jets 6 - Newport-Mesa rallied with eight

fourth-quarter points to defeat host Inglewood Saturday.

Tailback Carlo Valdes followed a key block from William O’Brien and

scored on a 10-yard touchdown run.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Jon Tripi tackled an Inglewood runner

in the end zone for a safety. Other top defensive plays came from Richie

Sorenson, Charles Vickery, Robbie Lusk, Brian Lawler, P.J. Simpson, Brice

Stillman, Will Brown, Tommy Folks, Travis Prickett, Steve Deverian, Brett

Hanrahan, Colin Wigley and Jake Lemmerman.

The offensive line was controlled by Corbin McNutt, Brice Jardine,

Justin Elbourn, Nick Reese, Jerry Whitney, Keifer Fairbanks, Andrew

Hawkins, James McKennon, Frankie Russo, Danny Malycky and Michael Jugan.

Clinic Seahawks 7, Fountain Valley Jaguars 6 - Andy Hayes bolted

around the left end for a 47-yard touchdown run, giving the Seahawks the

victory.

J.D. Abbott, Parker Norton and Kyle Chase each picked up valuable

yards for the Seahawks’ offense, while quarterback Troy Bundy was strong

on offense and defense. The O-line was anchored by Ryan Hatcher, Jeremy

Dunnjak, Trevor Dannelley, Ronnie Dunmore and Steven Clapp.

Newport-Mesa’s defense, led by Parker Norton, Jeff Aschieris and Nick

Gushue, had several goal-line stands and played very strong throughout

the game.

South Orange County Patriots 12, Junior Clinic Seahawks 6 - A

fourth-quarter miracle nearly came true for the Seahawks, but the

Patriots held on for the win.

Trailing, 12-0, Michael Taormina scored the Seahawks’ lone touchdown

to cut the lead in half. Then, with time running out, Drew Hoffenberg

ripped the football out of a Patriot runner’s hands and raced 65 yards

down to the Patriots’ 11-yard-line.

However, the Patriots mounted a tough defensive stand and preserved

the win.

Runners Buzz Yokoyama and Austin Blodgett had big holes to run

through, thanks to the offensive line of Andrew Machoskie, Reid Johnson,

Jack Kanen, Tyler Barbato and Cassidy Gatewood.

On defense, Newport-Mesa was sparked by strong play from Graeme

Fraser, Joseph DiCesare, Ryan Andrews and Tyler Henry.

Cerritos Steelers 6, Junior Pee Wee Seahawks 0 - Newport-Mesa played a

tough defensive struggle against Cerritos, but fell just short in the

final two minutes of action.

The defense was led by Bo Attyah, Michael Ensign, Greg Stiegler and

Scott Chene, while on offense, Woody Yokoyma had some big runs behind the

offensive line of Patrick Marin-Finn, Chene, Nick Svendsen and Hunter

Alder.

Other key players for Newport-Mesa included Bucko Theriot, Travis

Sorensen, Jordan Lusk, Robert Connealy and Cole Shepard.
