A Costa Mesa maintenance service company announced Wednesday it will

install sensors at San Diego area naval bases, saving the Navy more than

$1 million.

Lighting Technology Services Inc., a lighting retrofit and maintenance

service company, signed a $2.5-million contract with the Navy to install

occupancy sensors at three San Diego naval bases.

The company also plans to conserve energy with a device called the

“VendingMiser,” a device that will be used on about 1,500 vending

machines throughout the bases.

The VendingMiser powers down a vending machine when the area

surrounding the machine is unoccupied and re-powers the machine when the

area is occupied, ensuring the product is always ice cold.

The company plans to have all sensors and VendingMisers installed at

the bases by 2002.
