Boys and girls cross country: Eagles sweep at Laguna Beach

LAGUNA BEACH - The Estancia High boys and girls cross country teams

posted a victory each to open the Pacific Coast League season at Laguna

Beach Thursday.

Eagles junior Humberto Rojas (16:45) and senior Mike Casillas (16:50)

provided the 1-2 finish, leading to a 19-36 victory.

In other boys PCL action, Corona del Mar took care of visiting

University, 16-47, as Sea Kings attained the top four finishes.

Senior Dustin Hodges (16:20), sophomore Kevin Artz (16:32), senior Ben

Inouye (16:50) and senior Mark Pomerantz (16:50) did their 1-2-3-4 act.

At Northwood, the Costa Mesa boys squad began the PCL season with a

25-30 victory, as senior Irwin Salas led the Mustangs with his

first-place finish in 16:27.

In girls PCL action:

Estancia (1-0) was led by junior Diana Rosete, who won the race in

20:15. Ludi Valdez (21:52), and twins Hanni (22:44) and Jasmine Geider

(22:50) and senior Judy Hernandez (23:03) also finished in the top 10.

The Sea Kings maintained their four-year unbeaten streak in the PCL

with a 20-38 win over University. CdM senior Julie Allen outdistanced the

field, grabbing first place in 17:20, while junior Becky Cummins (19:12)

finished third.

Costa Mesa dropped a 23-38 decision to Northwood. Sophomore Christine

Bjelland (19:24) and senior Eileen Bello (20:17) finished second and

third, respectively.

The Eagles will compete in the Huntington Invitational Saturday, then

will face University at Mason Park in Irvine Wednesday.

CdM will take the weekend off before taking on Costa Mesa Thursday at

Mesa. The Mustangs will compete in the Dana Hills Invitational this

weekend.
