UCI soccer swept

Friday wasn’t the Anteaters’ day as the men’s soccer team dropped a

1-0 decision at Loyola Marymount in the host’s tournament opener, and the

women were turned away in overtime at USC, 3-2.

The men’s game found the Anteaters playing Loyola nose-to-nose

throughout the first half, but in the second half Kevin Novak drove

through the box and scored with just seven minutes remaining in

regulation.

C.J. Cooper went the distance for the Anteaters in the net and turned

away four shots. Loyola outshot UCI, 11-9, as it improved to 3-3-0. UCI,

with its first loss of the season, fell to 3-1-1.

Scott Bowman, Brad Aspey, David Rawlings and Travis Cutler each had a

shot on the Loyola goal, but came up short.

In the women’s game at USC, sophomore forward Jessica Edwards scored

the game-winner 13:51 into overtime. It was the first goal of the season

for Edwards.

The Anteaters had pushed USC into overtime with the scoring exploits

of Erin Tuvey and Hayley McNallan.

Tuvey scored off a free kick from Robyn Piotrowski at 17:59, and

McNallan scored her fourth goal of the season off a cornerkick from Kelly

Ridge less than two minutes later to even the count at 2-2.

USC controlled the game with a 19-9 margin in shots on goal.

The Trojans improved to 2-3. UC Irvine fell to 3-2.
