Junior All-American Football:

The Newport-Mesa Junior Midget Seahawks took advantage of an

interception late in the game to beat the La Mirada Matadors, 22-14, on

Saturday.

With 39 seconds left in the game and the score tied, 14-14, Matt

Reiger picked off a Matador pass on La Mirada’s 48-yard line. With 13

seconds left, Ryan Lance threw a swing pass to John Angelo behind the

line of scrimmage. Angelo then made a 48-yard touchdown pass to Reiger to

give the Seahawks the victory over the defending Super Bowl champions.

Lance opened the game with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Angelo, giving

the Seahawks a 6-0 lead. The Matadors responded with a 60-yard drive to

tie the game, 6-6, with 1:31 remaining in the first quarter.

The Matadors took a 14-6 lead with 3:02 remaining in the third

quarter, but the Seahawks battled back. Lance connected with Matt Burgner

to set up a short touchdown reception by Mike Orosco, cutting the

Matadors lead to 14-12. Lance connected with Burgner again for the

two-point conversion to tie the game, 14-14.

The Seahawks remained strong defensively. Delano McKenzie had two

tackles beind the line of scrimmage, forcing the Matadors to turn the

ball over on downs with 1:31 left in the game. Three plays later, the

Matadors intercepted a pass in the endzone, but the Seahawks’ Reiger

returned the favor, intercepting the ball to set up the winning

touchdown.

Austin Ford, Robert Attyah, Chris Gowdy, Robert Connealy and Andrew

Fulcher contributed on defense. Linebacker Adrian Luchs, Max Stiegler,

Woody Yokoyama and Brian Julian made some good tackles. Jordan Lusk and

Travis Sorenson also contributed with some nice hits on the Colts

receivers.

Andrew McDonald made his first start at quarterback and Kevin Rask,

Patrick Marinfinn, Danny Miller, Robert Connealy and Nick Tripi also

contributed offensively. Travis Sorenson, Austin Raiser and Bucko Theriot

also played well while Cole Shepard and Jacob Gilbert made some hard

blocks.

Mission Viejo Cowboys 33, Clinic Seahawks 26 - The Seahawks were the

first team to score against the Cowboys this year and the first to score

against them in the Cowboys’ last eight games. Nick Taormina and Troy

Bundy had touchdown runs on offense and Kyle Chene had two on defense.

The offense was led by Bret Klein, Steven Clapp, Ronnie Dunmore, Grant

Johnson, Lee Cowan and Ryan Hatcher. The line opened holes for J.D.

Abbot, Christian Anderson, Parker Norton and Andy Hayes.

The defense was led by Kyle Chene and Logan Mowery. Jensen Hodge,

Sebastian Welch and Chris Kraft also contributed to stopping the Cowboys.

The Seahawks will play the South Bay Packers next on the road.

Huntington Beach Dolphins 20, Junior Clinic Seahawks 0 - Except for a

few long plays, the Seahawk defense held its ground throughout most of

the game. Ryan Andrews, Justus Gildart and Buzzy Yokoyama contributed on

defense.

Graeme Fraser played well on offense, with help from strong blocking

by Andrew Machoskie, Tyler Barbato, Hunter Durante, Tyler Henry, Jack

Kanen, Mario Rosales and Andrews.

The Seahawks will travel to Compton this week to play against the

Compton Junior Clinic squad.
