A Huntington Beach man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of threatening

to kill an elderly Iranian couple out for a walk Monday morning.

Steven James McManus, 43, was charged with criminal threats, hate

crimes, and resisting arrest after allegedly yelling death threats and

other hateful things at an Iranian couple.

The 77-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife told officers they were

out for a walk at 9 a.m. Monday when McManus drove past them in a black

sedan and made an abrupt U-turn and pulled onto a side street.

McManus allegedly approached the couple on foot and began yelling at

them, demanding to know where they were from, said Huntington Beach

Police Lt. Luis Ochoa.

“When they told him they were from Iran, he told them to go across the

street or he would kill them,” Ochoa said.

A neighbor, who witnessed the confrontation, picked them up in a car

and drove them to their son’s residence, where the son reported the

incident to police because the couple was terrified by the incident.

Another witness told Police where McManus lived. He was taken into

custody following a struggle with police. His bail was set at $10,000.
