SEPTEMBER

RAMEAU’S ‘PLATEE’

The Mark Morris Dance Group and others will perform Jean-Philippe

Rameau’s “Platee” at 8 p.m. today and Saturday in Segerstrom Hall, Orange

County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. The

comic opera will open the Eclectic Orange Festival 2001. $34-$89.

OCTOBER

‘ALL OVER BLUES’

The Muddy Waters Tribute Band will play a program titled “All Over

Blues” at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus

Drive, Irvine. The band stars Chris Thomas King, who portrayed blues man

Tommy Johnson in “O Brother, Where Art Thou.” $25-$30.

MARINO FORMENTI

Pianist Marino Formenti will perform selections of contemporary piano

music at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Founders Hall, Orange County Performing Arts

Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. $19.

AMERICAN RUSSIAN YOUTH

The American Russian Youth Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday at the Orange County High School of the Arts, 3591 Cerritos

Ave., Los Alamitos. $7-$10.

BALLET PACIFICA

Ballet Pacifica will present Robert Sund’s “Liaisons,” Susan Hadley’s

“Aquilarco,” Antony Tudor’s “Sunflowers” and Molly Lynch’s “Different

Trains” at 8 p.m. Friday and 2:30 and 8 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Irvine Barclay

Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine. $10-$25.

‘YOU ARE HEAR’

The Orange County Museum of Art will present a musical exhibit from

Oct. 6-29. Titled “You Are Hear,” the exhibit will include musical

instrument sculptures, a video installation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s

“Helicopter Quartet,” and performances of “Poeme Symphonique” for 100

metronomes. The museum is at 850 San Clemente Drive, Newport Beach. Hours

are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Museum admission is $5

for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and free for members and

children 16 and younger.

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA KREMLIN

The Chamber Orchestra Kremlin will perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at the

Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine. The program will

include pianist Irina Schnittke performing the works of her late husband,

Albert. $20-$29.

KRONOS QUARTET

The Kronos Quartet, with guest star Irina Schnittke, will perform at 8

p.m. Oct. 9-10 at Founders Hall, Orange County Performing Arts Center,

600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. $29.

JOE GOODE PERFORMANCE GROUP

The Joe Goode Performance Group will perform the West Coast premiere

of “The Transparent Body,” along with other dance pieces, at 8 p.m. Oct.

11-12 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine. $30-$35.

‘ANCESTRAL VOICES’

A.R. Gurney’s “Ancestral Voices” will be performed at 8 p.m. Oct. 13

at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine. The play will

star Fred Savage, Mariette Hartley, Rene Auberjonois and more. $26-$32.

LEONIDAS KAVAKOS

Greek violinist Leonidas Kavakos will perform Bach, Ravel and more at

3 p.m. Oct. 14 at Founders Hall, Orange County Performing Arts Center,

600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. $19.

BERLIN PHILHARMONIC

The Berlin Philharmonic will perform works by Bach at 8 p.m. Oct. 15

and works by Bach and Richard Wagner at 8 p.m. Oct. 16 at Segerstrom Hall, Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa

Mesa. $34-$109.

NATIONAL BALLET OF CUBA

The Orange County Performing Arts Center will present Alicia Alonso’s

National Ballet of Cuba on Oct. 18-21 with two programs: “La Magia de

Alonso” and “Coppelia.” “Alonso” will be performed at 8 p.m. Oct. 18-19.

“Coppelia” will be performed at 2 and 8 p.m. Oct. 20 and 2 p.m. Oct. 21.

The Center is at 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. $20-$70.

‘CROUCHING TIGER’

Tan Dun will conduct the “‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ Concerto

for Erhu and Chamber Orchestra,” set to images of the film, at 8 p.m. Oct

19-20 and 3 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus

Drive, Irvine. $33-$38.

PHILHARMONIA BAROQUE ORCHESTRA

The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra will present 15 short pieces in the

early Italian Baroque style at 8 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Irvine Barclay

Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine. $ 29-$35.

BENNY GOODMAN: CLASSICAL

The lesser-known classical works of Benny Goodman will be performed at

8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine.

The performance will feature clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. $20-$29.

MIRIAM MAKEBA

“Mama Africa,” Miriam Makeba, will perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 25 at the

Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine. She was the first

African recording artist to be awarded a Grammy. $32-$40.

BENNY GOODMAN: BIG BAND

Works from Benny Goodman’s Big Band era will be performed by the

Eclectic Orange Big Band at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 in Segerstrom Hall, Orange

County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa.

DAVID SEDARIS

Popular NPR commentator and playwright David Sedaris will take the

stage at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive,

YAMATO, DRUMMERS OF JAPAN

Yamato, Drummers of Japan will take the stage at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at

PACIFIC CHORALE

Pacific Chorale will perform Verdi’s “Requiem” at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 in

NOVEMBER

‘SOON’

The North American premiere of Hal Hartley’s “Soon” will take place at

8 p.m. Nov. 1-3, 3 and 7 p.m. Nov. 4 and 8 p.m. Nov. 5-7 in Founders

Hall, Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa

Mesa. The theater piece examines the conflicts between the extremes of

religious belief and civic responsibility. $25.

‘RIGOLETTO’

Opera Pacific will present “Rigoletto” by Giuseppe Verdi at 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 6-10 and 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center,

600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. $25-$175.

‘POWDER HER FACE’

“Powder Her Face,” an opera by Thomas Ades, will be performed at 8

p.m. Nov. 9 and 4 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center,

6200 Atherton St., Long Beach. The opera is based on the scandalous life

of the Duchess of Argyll. $45-$70.
