Girls tennis: Sailors open league with win

NEWPORT BEACH - Megan Hawkins, Kelly Nelson and Krista McIntosh

swept their singles matches to lead the Newport Harbor High girls tennis

team to a 16-2 Sea View League opening victory over visiting Aliso Niguel

Friday.

The Sailors’ doubles tandems of Erika Buder and Vanessa Dunlap and

Carmen and Diana Khoury also swept their matches to improve Newport’s

record to 4-1, 1-0 in the Sea View League.

Newport will host Irvine Tuesday, play at Laguna Beach Wednesday, and

at Laguna Hills Thursday. Then, the Sailors will play in the High School

National All-Star Tournament Friday and Saturday, hosted by Corona del

Mar.

Singles - Hawkins (NH) def. Devendorf, 6-1, def. Knopf, 6-2,

(substitute) B. Nelson (NH) lost to Nikkloo, 1-6; K. Nelson (NH) won,

6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2); McIntosh (NH) won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0.

Doubles - Buder-Dunlap (NH) def. Johnson-Frank, 6-4, def.

Heineman-Matthews, 6-1, def. Nguyen-Kemp, 6-3; C. Khoury-D. Khoury (NH)

won, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2; Olson-Adams (NH) lost, 3-6, won, 6-1, 6-3.
