Keri Phebus, a Corona del Mar High product, takes out her third
opponent in as many days in the Pacific Mutual U.S. Women’s Challenger of
Newport Beach. First, she breaks through with a first-round victory over
Pam Nelson. Phebus then carries her momentum into the next day when she
smashes third-seeded Anne Mall, 6-1, 6-2. Phebus, who is in her first
year as a pro, is not only unseeded but playing with no ranking on the
WTA Tour. She rises above the odds with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jessica
Steck of South Africa. Phebus then loses to Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Monte
Carlo, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Brandis Braverman, a Newport
Beach resident, stuns top-seeded Jolene Watanabe in the main draw’s first

The Estancia High football team rallies from a two-touchdown deficit
at halftime, with two TDs in the last 10:24 to win, 17-14, over Katella.
The winning score comes with just 28 seconds left. The Eagles’ Pete
Baniaga gets open at the goal line on a deep curl, latching on to junior
quarterback Matt Johner’s left-handed dart on third-and-10 from the 16.
Christian Gomez, who runs for 89 yards on 18 carries, pounds his way to
an 8-yard touchdown, early in the fourth quarter.
Estancia’s Adam Bollenbach scores eight goals to lead the Eagles’ boys
water polo team to a 15-11 nonleague victory at Valencia. The game is
tied at 10 with five minutes to play when the Eagles score four straight
goals in the next three minutes, including three by Bollenbach, to take
control.
The Corona del Mar girls tennis team edges Back Bay rival Newport
Harbor, 10-8. CdM’s No. 1 singles player Marci Asch sweeps her matches in
the Sea View League opener for both teams. CdM also receives standout
efforts from No. 2 singles player Lindsey Goldstein, and the doubles
tandems of Erika Anhood-Sara Cicerone and Jenny Murdy-Jenny Glasgow, all
of whom take two out of three matches. The Sailors have their starts too,
including the doubles team of Kim Lewis and Tracy Teal, who sweep three
hotly contested matches.
It’s oh so close, for the Costa Mesa High football team, after the
Mustangs suffer a 14-10 nonleague loss to Brea-Olinda. Take away one play
and Costa Mesa pulls off the upset of the season. The Mustangs lose
concentration on a 99-yard kickoff return by Brea-Olinda to open the
second half. The Wildcats grab and maintain a 14-10 lead. Mesa’s Johnny
Ospina, who runs for 100 yards on 15 carries, scores on an 11-yard
