Feedback -- Much ado about a Costa Mesa garage

What happened to the land of freedom? I think that Dave Morley should

be able to retain his garage bedroom as it was -- as it was created more

than about 50 years, as he says it. What happened to our land of free? I

came here because it was free -- or so it was in the ‘70s. I believe in

freedom. Unfortunately, we’ve got too many rules and regulations that

both our city of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa throw at us.

I’m looking at “Resident trying to save his bedroom.” Let’s see -- 50

years if I’m not mistaken. This is before Costa Mesa was a city. So we’re

talking grandfather’s law. Why does the grandfather’s law not apply here?

Regarding the article about Dave Morley and his converted bedroom: The

garage was converted 50 years ago. At his age, an exception to the new

maintenance code should be made, I think. To disrupt his yard and his

workshop and minimize the size of his home is wrong.

I was reading your article about Dave Morley, and I think he should be

able to grandfather his converted bedroom as long as none of the

neighbors have an objection.

I’m calling in regard to the article on Dave Morley and the code

enforcement officers. I think Morley should be completely exempt given

the way your article was written -- that house has been that way for 50

years.

I think the fact that he’s being harassed is a violation of him as a

citizen of this city. In addition, I think the code enforcement officers

are completely out of hand. I don’t know if this was initiated by the

city; I consider it a waste of the taxpayers’ dollars and an invasion of

the residents’ rights as residents of Costa Mesa. I don’t think the city

has any right coming onto our property and dictating what should and

should not be fixed unless it’s serious safety or health violations.

In addition, I think that they should be abolished unless there are

cases where there are violations -- safety and health violations. I think

they’re out of hand. They’re out of hand to the point where I was

landscaping my yard last year; the landscaping required a mass of dirt to

accumulate in my driveway, which I had no intentions of leaving there for

any length of time. Before I could even make arrangements to have the

pile of dirt removed, I was cited. That’s just one example of this being

completely out of hand as in Morley’s case.

I believe that there is a good percentage of people in Costa Mesa that

don’t use their garage to keep their automobile in. I feel that Morley

should be entitled to keep his garage as it has been used for the last 50

years. I believe the city government of Costa Mesa is trying to agitate

as many people as humanly possible. I’m sorry to hear that and see what’s

going on with them. I don’t know why they cannot leave this gentleman

alone.
