Pop Warner football: Defense dominates in Green Mustangs’ victory
The Costa Mesa Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee Green Mustangs’ defense
shuts down Stanton for a 27-0 victory on Saturday.
The Mustangs’ defense dominated the game, forcing six turnovers. Frank
Denoewer scored touchdowns on a 10-yard run and 26-yard interception
return.
Chris Gute also had a touchdown on a 25-yard run. He also gained some
ground on a 30-yard punt return. The Mustangs’ Drew Bauer and Jose
Martinez each had a sack to contribute on defense.
Damien Scheidt and Bauer each had one recovery. The Mustangs improve
to 2-2. Stanton falls to 1-3.
In other Pop Warner football action:
Lakewood Vikings 18, Junior Pee Wee Black Mustangs 0 - The Mustangs
put up a good fight against the Vikings, despite being withouth four
players who were sick. Roland Wood, Matt Viles, Josh Adams, Brian Simrak
and Joseph Galvez were strong on defense. Bobby Lenke, Jesse Dawson and
Josh Erno also contributed. Lenke stood in as quarterback since Andrew
Millian was out with the flu. Lenke put in a solid effort and recovered a
fumble for a 10-yard gain.
* The Mighty Mite Mustangs had a mighty impressive game on Saturday,
scoring on their first four possessions of the first half. Derek Amendola
scored on a 28-yard run and Grant McKee scored on a 35-yard run in the
first quarter.
In the second quarter, Sho Watanabe scored on a 25-yard run. With four
seconds left in the half, Derek Amendola threw a 12-yard touchdown pass
to Adam Spies to give the Mustangs a 25-0 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs’ offense kept the pressure on in the second half. Jake
Ferris ran a quarterback option for a 55-yard touchdown. The defense was
led by Shane Davis, Hans Anderle, James Lewis, David Griffin, Mark
Contreras, Ryan Weber, Zach Bateman, Matt Carlyle, Zach Vayda and Justin
Hobbs.
* Long Beach Rams 6, Pee Wee Mustangs 0 - The Mustangs fought hard and
held the Rams scoreless until the last three minutes of the game. The
Mustangs held the Rams at the goal line for three plays, but Long Beach
managed to score on fourth down for the win. Cody Matthews, Cody
Fairfield, Ian Abernathy and Juan Moreno carried the ball well for the
Rams despite the heat. Quarterback Gilbert Beas also had a solid game.
Garrick Williams, Jesse Marshall and Chris Hernandez made key tackles to
shut down the Rams’ offense.
