Men’s water polo: UCI suffer third-quarter letdown

SANTA BARBARA - Eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara scored four straight

goals to open the third quarter and went on to down No. 7 UC Irvine, 8-4,

in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at UCSB’s Campus Pool

Saturday.

Anteater senior John Dorfi scored the lone goal of the second quarter

to tie the game 2-2 at halftime.

But, the Gauchos’ Kyle Ashley opened the scoring spree for UCSB with a

goal at 4:55 of the third quarter and teammates Anthony Borasi, Tom

Coughlan and Patrick Treman followed with goals to give UCSB a 6-2 lead

before Dorfi scored with one second left in the third period to cut the

margin to 6-3.

Joey Pacelli scored to give UCSB a 7-2 lead with 5:19 left in the

fourth quarter, and goals by UCI’s Chris Kirchwehm and UCSB’s Borasi

closed out the scoring.

Trevor Spence recorded 11 saves for the Gauchos, who improved to 4-3

overall and 2-2 in the MPSF.

Dorfi scored three goals and Doug Finfrock had five saves for UCI,

which fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Both teams compete in the Northern California Tournament at Stanford

next Saturday and Sunday.

The Anteaters will face UC San Diego in their opening game of the

tourney at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
