Women’s cross country: Vanguard captures women’s title
COSTA MESA - Vanguard University claimed the women’s team title at
the Vanguard University Cross Country Invitational for the first time
since 1995, and the only time since the 5,000-meter meet has been held at
Fairview Park.
The Lions, with a team score of 31, beat second place Cal State
Bakersfield by 15 points as three Vanguard runners placed in the top
five.
Lions sophomore Sarah Hall, an Estancia High product, finished second
in the race with a time of 20:11, only four seconds after Chapman’s Kelly
Crampton, who claimed the individual title with a mark of 20:07.
Hall, who has finished second among the Lions in the previous two
races, improved her previous season’s best mark by 33 seconds as she
finished first for Vanguard for the first time in her career.
Crossing the finish line only seven seconds afte Hall was freshman
standout Liz Huipe, also a product of Estancia, with a time of 20:18.
Vanguard senior Beth Weidler, finishing fifth overall in the race,
clocked in at 20:54.
Freshman Jenny Thune also cracked the top ten for the Lions. She came
in ninth among 33 total runners with a time of 21:16. Dorianne Duffy and
Ashley Greer completed Vanguard’s effort with times of 22:39 and 26:48,
respectively.
