Infant dies after falling into pool

An infant girl, who was rushed to Hoag Hospital in critical condition
Friday after falling into a Corona del Mar backyard pool, died early
Saturday morning.
Roxane Swanson, 1, died of freshwater drowning, Orange County
Coroner’s officials said.
Newport Beach firefighters and paramedics responded to the call that
came in around 3 p.m. Friday. When paramedics arrived at the Cameo Shores
home, they found the mother giving CPR to her baby, officials said.
Roxane had gone into complete arrest, which means she was neither
breathing nor had a heartbeat. Officials said they got a feeble heartbeat
from her when they were on the way to Hoag Hospital.
Late Friday, Roxane was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Orange
County, where she died about 2:05 a.m. Saturday, officials said.
“She was in pretty bad shape even when they took her out of the pool,”
said Susan Thomas, spokeswoman for CHOC. “She died gradually through the
night. We did everything possible to bring her back but it was [futile].”
Officials said they did not know how long the baby had been in the
pool.
This is the city’s first pool drowning this year. In June, a
4-year-old Costa Mesa girl nearly drowned in a hotel swimming pool when
her father reportedly dozed off by the poolside.
