HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT
WHAT HAPPENED: The board unanimously approved a developmental extended
kindergarten program at Eader, Kettler and Perry schools
WHAT IT MEANS:
The extended kindergarten program has been offered by the district for
children too young to enter the regular kindergarten program in
September. State law requires that a child must be 5 at the time of
enrollment in the extended kindergarten program. Curriculum will address
various aspects of a child’s development and activities are geared to
promote self-esteem.
Linda Wheaton, the assistant to the superintendent, said the program
will begin on Jan. 28. An information letter will be sent out to parents
on Oct. 26 and registration will be held on Oct. 29 and Nov. 14 at home
schools. Should the number of those registering exceed the number of
spaces allotted in the program, Wheaton added, then a lottery to
determine who gets into the program will be held Nov. 28.
