Researchers at UC Irvine have developed a pilot program to help those

at risk for developing cervical cancer.

The one-stop program targets women who have the highest rates of the

disease, which can be deadly if not detected early, said Alberto Manetta,

professor of gynecological oncology at UCI’s College of Medicine.

The program enables women who have a pap smear test to wait a few

hours to see if it is abnormal. If it is, the doctor may cut away the

abnormal cells right away instead of trying to schedule another

appointment.

This saves time and increases the likelihood that the women will be

treated for this disease in a timely manner.

Researchers have set up health clinics in Santa Ana and Anaheim to

pilot the program. The clinics are part of a $2.5-million study funded by

the Institute of Health.
