KIDS HELPING KIDS: When children come knocking at your door this

Wednesday, Halloween, carrying a bright orange colored boxes with the

printing “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” on it, be generous in donating your

lose change.

In a joint project by UNICEF and Rotary International, announced last

June at a Rotary Convention in San Antonio, the funds raised will be used

to eradicate polio and help feed hungry children in Afghanistan.

“Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” fits right in with President Bush’s recent

request that American schoolchildren help Afghanistan schoolchildren by

donating funds to help feed and cloth them and take care of their medical

needs.

“Every dollar contributed will buy enough polio vaccine for two

children,” said Elmer Biggerstaff, president of the Rotary Club of

Newport-Balboa.

Rotary International has led the drive to eradicate polio by 2005 by

inoculating more than 2 billion children under the age of 5, Biggerstaff

said.

Pomona Elementary School children all will have UNICEF Trick or Treat

boxes, said Principal Julie McCormick.

Children should go with an adult to “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” or

organize a fund-raising event with the school, church or community group.

Collected coins can be deposited at a Coinstar machine found in grocery

stores in the area. By entering code 5555, the coins will be donated

directly to UNICEF, you won’t pay a fee and you will get a tax-deductible

receipt. For the nearest Coinstar location, call 1-800-928-CASH.

Don’t have the bright orange box? We have a limited supply at the

Daily Pilot office, 330 West Bay St, Costa Mesa and they are free for the

asking. Merchants are invited to put them on their cashier desks for the

week and raise funds as well. Parents and grandparents, here is a chance

to help your children or grandchildren learn about helping others while

keeping them safe this Halloween.

READING BY 9: Some folks who have wanted to volunteer as mentors

at Pomona, Whittier and Wilson schools have found it hard to get the

required tuberculosis test. Thanks to the Newport Mesa Unified School

District, volunteer mentors can now call the Healthy Start Clinic at

(949) 760-3382 and schedule a time for the free test.

The three schools say that more mentor volunteers are coming in each

week, but still more are needed if we are to make our goal of all 2,000

students having a Reading by 9 mentor.

Pomona, Whittier and Wilson elementary schools are looking for mentors

to donate one hour a week between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. To

volunteer at Pomona School, call Nancy Bammer at (949) 515-6980; at

Whittier School, call Sarah Markel at (949) 6898; and at Wilson School,

call Diane Clemensen at (949) 515-6995 Ext. 3209.

Laura Johnson of the Shalimar Learning Center notes that this fall

they have opened after-school learning centers at Pomona, Whittier and

Wilson elementary schools and are looking for volunteers to serve as

mentors to the students. For more information on the Shalimar sponsored

program or to volunteer, call Johnson at (949) 646-5797.

GOATHILL GO GETTERS: Karen Schwandt of the Mesa Goathill Go Getters

reports that they had more than 100 visitors on Sat., Oct. 6 at Harbor

Center where the 4-H Club members displayed their various projects. “We

passed out 52 brochures and made 20 T-shirts for a community service

project for Shriner’s Hospital” she adds. 4-H is alive and active in our

community.

SERVICE HOURS: A total of 360 hours of service were tabulated by

Costa Mesa-Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club members Ron DeGeare, Jess

Bequette, Tim Richey, Irwin Kinney, Bob Dressler and Bob Walker in recent

months. The hours for community service includes the time given for

Heritage House work parties, Boy Scouts and others service projects. That

is some serious volunteering.

TRIP TO NOWHERE: Some 50 members of Amigos Viejos gathered Wed.,

Oct. 17 at the Newport Beach Country Club to board a bus for the annual

“Trip to Nowhere” planned by President Bob Gardner, Seymour Beek, Cameron

Crowner, Tad Devine, Roger Neth, Rick Othmer, Bob Robins, Bill Ring and

Jeff Wilcox and executed by Rudy Baron. Up the San Diego Freeway we went,

then north on the Harbor Freeway, maybe to Olvera Street or China Town

some thought. Oops! The bus driver went the wrong direction on the Harbor

Freeway, so we exited and headed south, ending up for lunch at the Alpine

Inn at Alpine Village.

There we were entertained by a 10-piece German band while we dined on

a variety of Oktoberfest selections and sipped some German beer. Among

the attendees were Mike Schaefer, Ron Craig, Al Irwin, Seymour Beek, Norm

Loats, Dean Reavie, Bill Hamilton, Rick Williams, Bill Bluerock, Bob

Gardner (without his mustache), Bill Grundy, Chris Wynkop, Phil Glasglow

and Clark Booth. With the company and the setting, it was a most

enjoyable luncheon.
