Newport Harbor High boys win fifth straight Sea View crown

IRVINE - As if a predestined ritual, Newport Harbor High’s boys

cross country team once again dominated Sea View League competition at

the league finals at Irvine Regional Park Thursday afternoon as Coach Bim

Barry’s Sailors eased past Woodbridge for team honors, the Sailors’ fifth

straight league championship.

The Sailors, led by junior Alec Urtusuastegui’s second-place finish to

Woodbridge’s Michael Haddan, scored 28 points, with Woodbridge (35),

Aliso Niguel (65), Laguna Hills (95) and Irvine (147) trailing.

“Urtu,” as many prefer, ran a 15:34 over the three-mile course at

Irvine. Haddan won it in 14:40.

Also with key performances for the Sailors were Nick Miller (third in

15:34), Joel Furman (sixth in 16:07), Juan Rios (seventh in 16:09), Geoff

Doody (10th in 16:15) and Ivan Romero (12th in 16:38). Chris Negrete

finished 27th in 17:58.

The victory sends the Sailors on to the CIF Preliminaries at Mt. San

Antonio College a week from Saturday.

Also on their way to Mt. SAC are the Newport Harbor girls, who were

third in the team totals behind champion Woodbridge and runner-up Aliso

Niguel.

Lauren Paul was Harbor’s leading runner with a seventh-pace finish in

18:47, with Lisa Evans of Newport close by with a 19:09 for ninth place.

A solid pack of runners was the key to the third-place finish as Andi

Sarris went 19:38 (19th), Courtney Marshall went 19:52 (22nd), Amanda

Abbott went 20:15 (24th) and Allison Hochwald went 21:13 (28th).

“I was really happy with Andi Sarris,” said girls coach Eric Tweit.

“She really ran a good race. All seven of our girls ran their best times

of the year.”
