College women’s soccer: Lions dealt heart-breaker

COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University women’s soccer team suffered a

heart-breaking loss as visiting Notre Dame De Namur won on penalty kicks,

6-5, after a 1-1 tie in regulation and two scoreless overtime periods in

the first round of the NAIA Region II playoffs Saturday.

Vanguard took a 1-0 lead, 17 minutes into the game on a goal by Annie

Jacobs, who finished a cross pass from Jennifer Bird for her 11th goal of

the season.

The Lions (9-8) held Norte Dame (14-4-1) scoreless until the 71st

minute when Amber Davidson tied the score off an assist from Nia

Wooliscroft.

Vanguard’s Nicole Avila, Betsy Nienhuis, Bird, Jacobs and Elisabeth

McCary scored on penalty kicks. Lions goalie Jordan Fredriksen, a Newport

Harbor High product turned back five shots.
