PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Coming up with a photo idea is always the challenge photographers face

when they arrive at an assignment. A lot of the photos we shoot at the

Daily Pilot are portraits or prearranged photo opportunities. With the

exception of news and sports coverage, many of the photos are dependent

on what the photographer can do with what is given to him or her.

I was faced with illustrating our Halloween Sunday Story. Since the

possibility of photographing a ghost was not real likely, I had to make

things appear on my own. Using the eeriness of the abandoned look of the

Balboa Theater and a little flash, I was able to create a spooky photo --

with the help of Michele Roberge, executive director of the Balboa

Performing Arts Theater Foundation -- that captured the essence the scary

story.
