Like Mexican food and love combo plates for only $1.25? Yeah, that’s

bound to grab some attention. So hopes Avila’s El Ranchito, which has

restaurants in Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. Between 11

a.m. and 10 p.m. on Wednesday, the eatery will roll back prices to

celebrate its 35th anniversary.

Originally from Guanajuata, Mexico, Salvador Avila and his family came

to the United States and opened the first El Ranchito with only five

picnic tables in Huntington Park in 1966. Wow, sounds like life’s a

picnic for the Avilas. Just so long as there aren’t any ants to ruin it.

These cookies might get you to pucker up

While Mistletoe will also do the trick, Maggiano’s Little Italy wants

its new crescent-shaped lemon cookies to make people pucker up during the

holidays. Two dozen of “Vera’s Lemon Cookies” will be featured in a

special edition holiday gift tin.

The tin will boast a picture of the cookies and can be found at

Maggiano’s, locally found at 3333 Bristol Road, Costa Mesa. So, if you

want someone to pucker up, grab some mistletoe, a lemon or some lemon

cookies. Mmm . . . cookies.

Everyone loves all-natural logs that grow mushrooms

Lost Creek Mushroom Farm, an Oklahoma-based company, hopes everyone

loves the tasty fungi. New from the group comes a fungus-farm shiitake

log that grows mushrooms every two months for about four years. Shiitake

mushrooms, according to the farm, are the second most popular mushroom in

the world, selling for about $25 per pound in the United States.

Logs come in two sizes: small and large. The former are 13 to 14

inches in length and cost $37.45 while the latter are 19 to 20 inches and

cost $42.45. For more information, check out o7
