Huntington Beach students continue to give in response to the Sept. 11

terrorist attacks that rocked New York and Washington D.C.

Students at Peterson Elementary School spearheaded a Red Cross money

drive last week in an effort to aid victims of the tragedies. In a

weeklong effort that included collecting pennies, dimes, quarters and

even a few dollar bills and checks, the school’s student council was able

to collect more than $3,000.

The money was donated directly to the Red Cross earmarked for New York

and Washington, said Lisa McPherson and Jennifer Dixon, advisors for

Peterson’s student council.

Peterson students also had the opportunity to write cards and letters

and draw pictures, which were sent to the firefighters and families

affected by the tragedy.

“These efforts have been accomplished in the spirit of caring and

hope,” McPherson said. “It has been our small way to show our fellow

Americans that we care and are part of their super-extended family.”

Students learn to be prepared

How prepared is the city of Huntington Beach for disaster, whether it

be an earthquake, school tragedy or terrorism?

Glorria Morrison, Huntington Beach Emergency Services Coordinator,

will answer these questions and more on Thursday, Nov. 15, at a special meeting hosted by Ocean View High School’s Parent Teacher Student Assn.

“Knowing what to do until help arrives is the best way to keep

yourself and loved ones safe, and to keep the situation from escalating,”

Morrison said.

The discussion will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s library. The

community is encouraged to attend. Seating is limited.

Ocean View High is at 17071 Gothard St. at Warner Ave. For more

information, call 848-0656, Ext. 265.

Golden West in high gear

Golden West College is gearing up for several big events on campus

next week.

On Tuesday, the college’s Student Activities Office is sponsoring

Military Appreciation Day, which will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front

of the library. Activities planned include a flag raising ceremony and a

question and answer forum featuring former military representatives.

Students, community members, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

Wednesday and Thursday of next week, the Associated Students are

sponsoring “Red Cross blood donor days,” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The

college is urging students, community leaders, faculty and staff to sign

up by Friday.

The event will take place in Golden West’s Rustler Hangout, which is

south of the college gymnasium. Blood donations, Golden West staff member

Marie McHerrin said, take about an hour and a half to complete. Donors

must be in good health and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. The Red Cross

also stated that a person can donate blood every 56 days without

affecting their health.

For the past few months, the Orange County Red Cross branch has had to

purchase millions of dollars of blood from other resources in order to

meet specific requirements, McHerrin said.

To donate blood, call the Student Activities Office (714) at 895-8261

or stop by the office, which is on the second floor of the Student

Center. Walk-ins also are welcome.
