HIS SERVICE WILL BE MISSED: Longtime Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club member

Bill Thompson, who passed away last week, will be missed, as will his

service to the community and his club, said past President Charles

Markel. Thompson was born in Hawaii, graduated from Cal State Berkley in

1936, married his sweetheart Mary, had two children, and at the time of

his retirement several years ago owned and operated Hickory Farm in South

Coast Plaza. While active in business and during retirement, Thompson was

a member of Kiwanis.

For more than 10 years, Thompson was a volunteer at Share Our Selves,

involving Kiwanis Club members as well with the Meal on Wheels program.

“He was the most successful interclub chairman the club ever had,”

said Wayne Crawford, past president. “He held this job, and the club met

all the interclub goals during this period. He wheeled, begged, pleaded

and persuaded to the point that we had 100% interclub participation.”

Thompson received a Hixon Award from Kiwanis International (the

highest award from Kiwanis) for contributions toward Iodine Deficiency

Disorder and was involved with the UC Irvine basketball program as a

supporter and contributor to the program since he moved to Regency Point

in Irvine about 10 years ago with his wife.

“He was a real gentlemen in the true sense of the word, and I feel it

was a privilege to have known him,” adds Crawford.

DRUG COURT: Rotarian S.T.D. Lucas presented a $250 check from the

Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise to the Harbor Justice Center judge

who presides over the Drug Court. Six individuals graduated from the

16-month program Nov. 2 in a ceremony attended by members of the Rotary

Club who have supported the program since its inception.

LEARN ABOUT SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: The Virginia Castle Auxiliary of the

Assistance League of Newport-Mesa will hold an informational open house

and coffee from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Assistance League offices,

2220 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. According to Rosemarie Herold, this will

be an opportunity to learn about the variety of community services the

league provides and how you can become a member. For more information,

call (949) 759-0809.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SERVICE CLUBS: Robin Barnes, sponsored by

George Wines, joined the Costa Mesa-Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club.

Worth Repeating: From “Thought for the Day” provided by Greg Kelley of

the Newport-Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council -- “Outstanding leaders go out

of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people

believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish. High

expectations are the key to everything.” -- Sam Walton
