AYSO Region 97: Rebels triumph in battle with United Blue

The Rebels scored three goals in the first quarter en route to a

6-2 victory over United Blue in an AYSO Region 97 boys under-14 playoff

soccer game Saturday.

Renice Davis scored three goals in the game and Phil Garrett, Alex

Boullon and David Garrett each scored one. Jonathan Gordon and Sergio

Rodriquez provided speed up front.

Patrick Vlahakis almost scored with a strong shot on goal. Brian Wong

and Benjamin Pepic held back most United Blue attacks. Cameron Kilmer,

Wesley Urtusuastegui and Edgar Torres played well in the midfield. Jeremy

Lewis and Ethan Bartolic provided strong defense.

In girls under-14 action:

* Flinstones 5, Rebels 0 - Debbie Yoder-Lee and Hallie Mitchell each

scored two goals and Malorie McMains had one.

* Flinstones 3, No Fear 2 - Barbie Argueta, Yoder-Lee and Kathryn

Felder each scored a goal. Krista Campbell, Amanda Ward and Darci

Pennington were strong on defense. Heather Fuga was solid in the net.

Lauren-Leigh Frum, Anna Nguyen, Isabel Mendez and Deanne Lyons played

well. The Flinstones advance to the championship game Sunday.

In boys under-12 action:

* Blue Demons 3, Forest Monkeys 2 - The Forest Monkeys lost in a

shootout, but had a solid performance from goalkeeper Timothy Regan, who

made a key save toward the end of regulation. Leading the offense were

Preston Davey, Spencer Smith, Vinnie Finn, Danny Ingalls and Justin

Faber. Midfield was dominated by Nick Verdugo, Christian Scott and Taylor

Allee. The defense was anchored by Michael Gracia, Tyler Beard, Tommy

Hanrahan and Daron Arnold.

* Hornets 5, Raiders 1 - The Hornets scored three goals to open the

game, but the Raiders answered with a goal from R.J. D’Cruz. Morgan Lintz

and Jorel Porcile had the assists for the Raiders. Mitch Bancroft and

Collin Dennis played well in midfield while Jordan Hovis was solid at

fullback. For the Hornets, Travis Kuhns had a hat trick while Ben Frazier

and Willie Munoz each scored a goal. The Hornets’ defense was anchored by

John Swift.

* Raiders 2, Back Draft 1 - Facing playoff elimination, the Raiders

fell behind in the first quarter, but Jeff Cefalia scored with an assist

from Peter Nguyen. In the second half, Jeff Newman added a goal with an

assist from Brandon Rowley. Jason Jacobi, Brett Adams and Spenser Baratto

kept the Back Draft offense off balance. Chris Gutierrez made key saves

in the net.

In boys under-10 action:

* Grinders 6, Scorpions 1 - Sean Davis scored five goals and Robby

Hampton scored one with help from Sean Richards. Jackson Carmack, Nathan

Dickey and Preston Wheeler played well in the midfield while the defense

was led by Daniel Netzer, Jimmy Reed and Spencer Martinez. Max Collins

and Scott Felder were solid in the net to help the Grinders remain

undefeated.

* Titans 3, Rebels 1 - Kevin Cortez scored two goals and Jack Yeager

had one along with an assist. Shawn Shahidi and Brooks Brady also had

assists for the Titans. Davis Brown and Logan Newett played well as

goalkeepers and were supported by the defensive play of Cort Adler, Ethan

Fichtner and Christopher Cowie. Jeff Fichtner and Taylor Sims played well

on the attack.

* X-Terminators 3, Highlighters 2 - Dillan Freiberg and Ryan Albert

scored for the X-Terminators. Albert and Brian Baca had assists. Andy

Mangano and Kevin Krueger made key passes. Garrett Kerr, David Martinez,

Jake Black and Matt Russell contributed on defense for the X-Terminators

while Will Connelly and Simon Hedrick split the goalkeeper duties. The

Highlighters were led by Tristan Lobdell, who scored two goals.

* Lightning 4, Psychos 3 - Colton Gyulay scored two goals and John

Ryder and Ivan Becerra each scored one for the Lightning. Steven Miller,

Drew Diller and Sergio Garcia made key passes while Wil Curiel and

Matthew DiFrancisco were strong in midfield. Patrick Briand and Marcos

Urquiza contributed on defense. John Ryder and Miles Flanders were strong

in the net.

* The Panthers took on the Surfers and prevailed in a shootout. The

score was tied, 1-1, at the end of overtime.

In girls under-10 action:

* Red Dogs 5, Sour Apples 0 - McKenna Cottam scored three goals and

Courtney Francis and Chelsea Barth each scored one. Amy Kanotz, Indy

Tamplin and Kendra Mann played well. Brianna Truxton and Marianne Jones

anchored the defense. Veronica McLean, DeAnna Patel and Francis shared

goalkeeping duties.

In boys under-8 action:

* The Blue Magicians took on the Redcoats and were led by Nolan Mena

(four goals), A.J. Lowder and Paul Tadross. Also lending offensive

support were Kyle Regan, Tyler Kiehnle and James Littlefair. Goalkeepers

Ryan Shannon and Trevor Magana had solid performances. Caleb Candeleria

led the Redcoats in the net. Stevie Michaelsen contributed on offense

with many shots on goal. Marco Piazza demonstrated solid dribbling and

passing skills.

In boys under-7 action:

* The White Sharks battled the Blue Sharks. Nicholas Sargeant stopped

many shots on goal. Steven Keenen had a solid game and Dayton Cribbs also

played well. Matt Ammerman made key passes. Nathan Fulmizi, William Fuchs

and Pierce Ward also were on top of their game.

In boys under-6 action:

* The Zap-Dragons (9-1) finished their season and received goals from

Chris Dinatale, Quest Truxton and Nick Shallahamer. Montgomery Faigen and

Sean Cox made key passes. Garrett Spruth and Joey Gregory dominated the

midfield.
